The victim reported that the contact started on international dating platforms, including UkraineDate and RussianCupid, before the communication moved to private messaging through WhatsApp.
The profile used attractive personal photos, friendly conversation, and a family-based story to build trust. A child was also brought into the narrative, which made the later money requests sound more personal and urgent. This is a common manipulation tactic in romance scams: the victim is not only asked to help a woman, but also to feel responsible for a family situation.
The main financial request was connected to travel and documents. The victim received a document from a company called FlySeason, showing a calculation for administrative services connected to biometric passports. The requested amount was $480 for the registration of two biometric passports — one adult passport and one child passport.
The use of an “official-looking” invoice is an important warning sign. In real Ukrainian passport procedures, private travel companies do not issue this type of suspicious payment calculation for a foreign man to pay in the context of a dating relationship. The document appears designed to make the payment request look legitimate and urgent.
The case also involved a Ukrainian passport image in the name Iryna Plashchynska, passport number AP625318. In romance scams, passport scans are often used to calm doubts, prove identity, or convince the victim that the woman is ready to travel. A passport image by itself does not prove that the person behind the dating profile is genuine or that the travel story is real.

According to the victim report, the story later expanded beyond passport fees and included additional travel-related expenses such as tickets, transportation, and other documents.
The pattern is clear: first, the profile creates romantic interest; then communication moves away from the dating site; then personal photos and documents are used to build credibility; finally, the victim is asked to pay for travel, passports, or administrative fees before any real meeting takes place.
