Maria is a very clever woman, using sophisticated scamming techniques.
She plays very sweet, attentive and innocent. Promising everything, including marriage, while giving nothing.
She will send many beautiful photos, often 1 or 2, everyday, to hook her man.
At that point, will have all kinds of problems that need money: Roof leak, boiler broke, flooding, ill health, surgery, etc. Even using her son, who is now an adult, or mother, or grandmother, as bait, to solicit funds.
Of course, like most dating scammers, she will need money to see you, for a passport, for visas, but something will come up and she will not be able to meet you.
Of course, she will be profusely sorry and promise to meet later. This next meeting will not materialize either.
