Updated for 2025. If your Ukrainian international passport (закордонний паспорт) is near expiry, already extended by a consulate, or you live abroad, this guide shows how to get a valid document in 2025 and avoid problems at the border.
Quick facts for 2025
- “Renewal” = new biometric passport. There is no sticker-style renewal; a fresh biometric booklet is issued.
- Extension stamps were temporary. Wartime 5-year extension stamps are being phased out. Replace extended booklets to avoid entry refusals.
- Apply outside Ukraine. Ukrainian embassies/consulates and authorized SE “Document” centers abroad accept applications; appointment is usually required.
- Diia helps for ID, not travel. Digital documents do not replace a physical biometric passport at the border.
Do you need a new passport now?
- Extended by stamp: Replace with a new biometric passport before international travel, especially to Schengen.
- Expires within 6–9 months: Many countries require 3–6 months’ validity on entry—apply early.
- Changed personal data: Get a new document reflecting the change.
How to apply outside Ukraine (2025)
- Choose a location. Nearest embassy/consulate or SE “Document” service point abroad.
- Book an appointment. Most posts use online scheduling; walk-ins are rare.
- Prepare documents. Current/expired international passport (if any), Ukrainian ID (ID-card or internal passport), proof of legal stay/status as applicable, completed application, and photo if required (many capture on site).
- Biometrics capture. Your fingerprints and photo are taken; the old booklet may be retained or invalidated.
- Collect or receive by mail. Issuance times and delivery options vary by country and workload.
Men 18–65: military-registration checks abroad
Outside Ukraine, men of conscription age are subject to verification of military-registration data during passport issuance. Requirements are coordinated electronically; check your consular post’s current rules before booking.
Traveling with an extended booklet
Policies tightened in 2024–2025. Many Schengen border points do not accept extended booklets for entry unless you hold a residence permit or long-term visa. Replace an extended booklet with a new biometric passport before travel.
Diia: what it can and cannot do
- Useful for identification in banks and public services (where accepted) and to store digital copies.
- Not a substitute for a physical biometric passport when crossing borders.
Real client story: the “Kostyk” case
A client sent us a girlfriend’s “Ukrainian passport” to justify urgent travel. Our forensic review found red flags: incorrect fonts (genuine data on modern booklets are laser-engraved), a watermark set inconsistent with the claimed issue date, and a place-of-birth format not used on authentic documents. We identified the woman under a different name. The client avoided funding a trip based on a forged passport and proceeded with our full identity report.
